What is the function of blind flange?

Blind flanges can be used to repair pipes farther away. In fact, during pipeline construction, blind flanges may be installed in the final length of the pipeline. This allows the pipe to be extended or continued by adding to the final flange. Without blind flanges, it is nearly impossible to repair or perform continuous maintenance on the line unless the flow is closed at an earlier valve, which can affect miles of line.

Test flange (Blind flange) order

Blind flange is a kind of circular plate, which has all relevant holes, but no central hole. About the sealing surface “RF”:

“RF” is the short name of raised face a kind of sealing face of flanges. The sealing surface of the flange is flat, and the gasket contact area is large. After pretightening, the gasket is easy to extend or move to both sides, and the sealing property is poor, which is only suitable for low-pressure occasions. Except for RF there are other types of sealing faces such as FM(female and male), RJ (ring joint) and TG(tongue and groove) which have better performance in sealing property can be used for high pressure occasions.

European Standard EN 1092-1 — Flanges for pipes — Requirements for steel flanges are specified according to their nominal pressure (PN) and size (DN). What are the differences between plate flanges FF and RF?

“FF” and “RF” are all the sealing faces of plate flanges. Plate flange FF is called EN1092-1 type 01A and RF is called EN1092-1 type 01B.

The first and most widely used TYPE is EN 1092-1 Type 01A flat welded flange.

The label of flange provides a lot of information: EN 1092-1 is the production standard, type 01 means it is a welded flange, and A means flat sealing face. These flanges are used to join pipes and welded by overlap welding. And then they are connected by bolts.

Flat flanges conforming to EN1092-1 Type 01A are designed to connect piping, valves, fittings and pumps together. The connection is achieved by through overlap welding. The commonly adopted pressure is PN10, PN16, PN25, and PN40, the diameter is from DN15-DN1200.

The second type of flange is also flat welded flange (Type 01), but their sealing face is different from the previous one because they have a raised face called type 01B. The EN 1092-1 Type 01B RF flanges have a low pressure relief ring around the center hole of the flange, which is useful and convenient for checking the position of the gasket. They are also welded by overlap welding and connected by bolts together.

Raised face flanges conforming to EN1092-1 Type 01B are designed to connect piping, valves, fittings and pumps together. The surfaces of the gaskets are raised above the bolted circular surface and the commonly adopted pressure is PN10, PN16, PN25, and PN40, the diameter is from DN15-DN1200.

What are the features of flat welding flange?

Flat welding flange is suitable for low pressure grade, pressure fluctuation, vibration and shock are not serious in the pipeline system. The advantages of flat welding flanges are that they are easier to center, and the price is relatively cheap, so it has been widely used.

The disadvantages of plate flanges:

First, the rigidity is poor, do not use in hazardous occasions.
Second, They are more likely to bump in transportation because of the shape features.
Third, the main design disadvantage of flat welded flanges is that they cannot guarantee no leakage.
